Earth paints

We have been reading about Earth Paints. Earth Paints are paints made out of crushed clay or soil and mixed with water. In the story the children found different coloured soil in the vegetable garden, compost, near a swamp, beside a stream, under the bark on the playground, clay off a bank, building site and from the river.
Aborigines used to use Earth Paints to paint pictures on cave walls or bark. They used twigs, bamboo sticks and sometimes their fingers to paint. So that the paint stuck they mixed emu and fish oil or beeswax with the paint.

Here is my earth paint painting.

The petting zoo

At first Johnson thought it was a joke. Speeding down the country road the crude sign was only a blur. But it was that one word. Slowing down, he swung the Lexus onto the paved shoulder. In the rearview mirror, he could see it clearly. The sign was tacked to a stick that was stuck in the ground just beyond the paved shoulder. Shifting the powerful car into reverse, Johnson jammed the accelerator down. The tires squealed and loose gravel flew as he tore back up the road. Screeching to a halt, Johnson stared at the faded handwriting: ELSWORTH'S FAMOUS SPIDER PETTING ZOO 5Ms Next RT Spiders fascinated Johnson. One summer, when he was eight, a large gold and black spider had taken up residence underneath the shingles by the back door. Every morning, Johnson would gather up ants in a jar from a nest in the scrubby woods behind his house. One by one, he would drop the wriggling insects into the web. With lightning speed, the spider would spring from her hiding place and race towards the victim. Sinking her fangs into the ant, she would retreat, waiting for the poison to take effect. When the ant slowly stopped struggling, she would climb back down and delicately wrap her prey in a white shroud. This continued until, one day, his mother caught him. "What a cruel little boy you are," she scolded between clenched teeth as she pummeled his backside. He could still feel the shame of being spanked. Years later, in a rare moment of remorse, Johnson wondered what it was like for the ant. Trapped…helpless…waiting for the spider to return. Did they know fear or horror? Or was that something only humans experienced? The insect brain was too small he told himself. Or so he hoped. Five miles, thought Johnson, This side trip might only add another half hour or so to his journey. He would still have time once he got to his motel to have a shower. The dinner meeting with the buyer from the supermarket chain wasn't until 6 o'clock and it was only 4 now. Coasting forward, Johnson scanned the road looking for the turnoff. About one hundred yards ahead, he saw a lane that intersected with the highway. Flicking on his turn signal, he shot a quick glance at his watch. If I don't find it in fifteen minutes, he promised himself, I'll turn back. Accelerating smoothly, he turned onto a well-paved secondary road with deep ditches on either side. Punching the buttons on the CD player, he stretched his arms, settling back into the soft leather seat. As the throbbing beat of Queen filled the Lexus, his mood lightened - an unexpected adventure in an otherwise boring day. Johnson hated his job. Endless meetings with bad food and balding buyers. Too many drinks and too many hangovers. He was packing on the pounds, too. I have to get back to the gym, he reminded himself. The only redeeming feature of his job was that he was good at it. Top sales rep for the last three years. I should have been an actor, he told himself. Instead I'm selling toilet paper and tampons to these turkeys. As the needle on the speedometer crept higher and higher, the neatly kept fields and freshly painted houses became a blur. Mile after mile slipped by. Johnson felt that he and the car had become one, soaring along like a hawk on a summer breeze. But his mood soon soured. The condition of the road deteriorated. Asphalt gave way to chip-seal, which gave way to gravel; and, finally ended up as dirt. Johnson jumped on the brakes when a huge pothole emerged in the center of the road. Cursing the delay, he checked his watch again. It was almost 5. The long drive down the country road had dulled his sense of time. I better turn around, he cautioned himself. As he studied the road ahead looking for a safe place to make a U-turn, he saw it. An old farm house set back from the road. If it hadn't been for the pothole, he would have missed it completely. By the mailbox, a freshly painted sign read:

Amazing Race

We ran as fast as we could to snatch the ribbon off the billboard.  In the holidays I took part in an amazing race.

Olly came and picked us up to go to the Warehouse  to buy prizes.  When we got to the Warehouse we asked to go to the  toy department. I was playing on the long board, this is a skateboard.  My brother found 100 dollars on the ground. He came and showed me the 100 dollars. I was excited that we had $100. We had to show Olly because it was the right thing to do.

When we got to Totara park we saw Jules. We waited for a while before the race was going to begin. Then we started the race, we had to paint our faces green because that was our groups color .  The first activity was bobbing for apples I got the apple in my teeth and then
we went to get the next clue. We ran and ran and ran I was so tired. Finally I got the ribbon but we had to run back to the entrance it took forever to get there .

For the next activity our team ran up the steep hill. We had to grab a ribbon from off a pole. I had the ribbon in my hand and headed back to the entrance. I had to put a bandana on over my eyes so I couldn't see where I was going, Olly was my guide, when we reached our goal it was my turn to guide Olly.

Our final active was called Fear Factor. We had to put our hand in a box, I was nervous because I didn't know what was going to be in it. I put my hand in, it felt really slimy and yuck. There were plastic spiders and centipedes in the box. They felt like fish bones. I knew it was hair gel but I did not like it. Olly tried and got the card out because I couldn't do it.

At every activity we collected these cards. When we had all 3 cards we had to find out what the secret word was. I was in charge of doing this. It wasn't that hard to work it out. Our word was Kakapo. “YES!!!!!” I yelled we had won the game. I had so much fun I was really excited. The prize for winning was 20 dollars.

Shelford Feet First SL Part 1

White and yellow belts signify that a student is a beginner. White symbolizes the innocence of a new student that embarks on his journey with no prior knowledge. A yellow belt symbolizes a seedling being adorned by the sun's rays; and also the student opening his mind and allowing the wisdom of his sensai to penetrate his consciousness.Orange, green and blue belts are given to the student already immersed in the study and application of karate. The orange-belt student begins to develop both physically and mentally in his martial arts discipline. Green-belt students have a firm foundation of martial arts knowledge on which to build as they practice and refine their skills. The blue belt is a symbol of the sky, which the young plant tries to reach. The blue-belt student focuses his energy on achieving the next level.

Zoom! I speed down the slide. In the holidays Brandon, Olly, Anahera, Omeka, Logan and some others went with me to Parakai.

When we arrived we got changed and jumped in the pool for little while and went on the slides but we had to run up spiral ramp. It made us feel annoyed because it took so long to get up. I was puffed and cold. Lucky the water was warm.

Then finally we got to top we sild down it again and again. After we got bored from running up the ramp we had lunch. Me and my brother went to the game place. Then we went in the hottest pool.

After a while we left the pools. In the end it was fun.

The Black panther

The Black Panther

Hi my name is Johnny Farlen and I am in my 20s. Let me tell you about an important day of my life.

One day I was at the zoo taking pictures of panthers when me and my brother fell in the cage. The panther thought we were food. The zookeepers were too late. We had been bit by panthers. We had cuts and scars  We were very lucky to survive.

During the next week my brother and I got  angry at each other. Claws came out of our knuckles! We did not know we could do that. We were shocked so we tried a magic trick to see if that would work. It worked! Another strange thing happened, each time we would think of people we shaped shifted into them. My sport car wouldn't open so I tried hacking my door with my mind and it worked.  This is cool.

The day after we heard a cry from a girl. “Help me” she said. We went to the place that we had heard her. Then we saw a girl who had being robbed. We jumped off the roof.  “Stop”we said to the robber but he ran away. Then we appeared in front of him. “Hand over the bag” we demanded. We had got angry with him. Our claws came out and the robber got scared. He handed over the girls bag quickly.

We returned the bag and the robber went jail.

BADMINTON

Have you played badminton before? We did it with our math class On Tuesday with Robby. We warmed up with a game of stuck in the mud .

Robby showed us how to do a backhand serve.  This is when the back of your hand is facing your partner while you are holding your racket. You can make it go high by serving it and then  people can’t  get it.

A forehand is when the front of your hand is facing your partner. When I  hit the shuttle with my forehand I couldn’t hit it as well as using my backhand.

Eating Pikopiko

We have been reading about eating pikopiko. Pikopiko is a native fern that can be eaten.

Sunday 30 March 2014

On Saturday Me Brandon , Keyana, Uncle david and da and dad . Da and dad planned a day to go hotwater beach it took for ever, all of us saw nice American cars  it was fun because every time we went to around the corner we would see new car. Afterwards we played a game called cricket, this is how you play it.  When you see 2 white cars then it starts and you see how many cars you can get before you see a red car then you’re out. My uncle got 35 i got 21 and keyana 20 and Brandon 30, that means uncle won the game.  We were in the coromandel it was high off the ground it looked scary as if we would tip off the end of the road, and it had dodgy corners, so we had to go slow, so we don’t fall off the corner.   We went to the beach for a little while, we had to get some shovels  to dig a hole in the sand, the water was hot when we dug in the ground, so we laid in it, and it was like a bath but we didn’t have to put water in them like a bath, it just came from the ground.  We had a picnic at a different beach, it was not better hotwater beach but we got some pipi”s and mussel’s. Then me and brandon saw an eagle ray in the water, we rode the waves they were big we went back up the hills and saw more nice cars behind us, then we saw a accident, we thought it was a car that had being going fast but it was a bike that had crash over and went it off the road and it looked bad and then we went home the end.

shelford Why should use your knife and fork

Why should we use a knife and fork to eat our dinner?

Have you ever used your hands to eat your dinner?  If you have your hands will get very sticky and if you touch something with them then that will get sticky as well. That’s why it’s good to use a knife and fork.

Cleanliness/Hygiene
Using a knife and fork will keep your hands clean. If you don’t use a knife and fork then germs could get on your food and make you sick because you didn’t wash your hands after playing outside.  If you use a knife and fork you can also cut your food up to make it easier to eat and you won’t have to use your hands to make the food smaller.

Edible Pieces
It’s much easier to cut your food when you have a knife and fork. You can cut food into edible pieces  so you will not choke on it and you don’t end up going to the hospital. Smaller pieces of food are much easier to eat.
Manners
When you use a knife and fork you are showing good manners. Sometimes you need to use your hands to eat some food but first you need to wash your hands. We also use our knife and fork incase someone else wants to try our food and we won’t be sharing germs as well !.

Why should we use a knife and fork to eat ? Because it is good manners to do so and very unhygienic to use your hands because they might be dirty and you also can get sick and probably will end up in hospital but some foods you can use your hands but remember to wash them before you eat and touch  food with your hands.
